Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescribing guidelines require that the quantities of medication issued on repeat prescriptions will usually be for a single month's supply.  A review of medication given on repeat prescriptions is undertaken at intervals of usually no more than six months (and may require blood tests or an appointment with the nurse rather than the doctor). This allows us to ensure that continuing treatment is appropriate and safe.

There are three ways to request a repeat prescription:

• return your pre-printed prescription counterfoil in the prescription near the reception counter, having marked it to indicate those items you wish to reorder.
• you, or your family member, can order your prescription following the link on this page to the online form.
• post your repeat prescription request to the surgery.

Please allow 3 working days (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays), for your request to be processed. Any problems please telephone the surgery.

From April 2019 you will no longer be able to order your repeat prescriptions by telephone for safety reasons.

What do I need to do?

There are different ways to order:

• You, or a family member, can order your prescription online using www.nhsapp.service.nhs.uk/login You can do this at any time of the day or night.

• Place the tear-off part of your repeat prescription in the prescriptions box in the surgery.

• Post your repeat prescription to the surgery.

Dispensary

The regulations allow us to dispense to those of our patients who live more than a mile (as the crow flies) from the nearest community pharmacy. We cannot dispense to any other patients.

If you live more than one mile from a pharmacy you may collect your medicines from our dispensary.

If you have an exemption certificate please be prepared to show it to the dispenser before collecting your medicines.

Please note, as from JANUARY 2024, the dispensary will be CLOSED from 4pm every Friday.

Please ensure you collect your medication before 4pm.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge those who can afford to pay for their medicines.  Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

Ripon Spa Surgery is currently using a new Prescription Service. The service is a more secure way for prescriptions to be sent to the Pharmacy as they are sent electronically, reducing the risk of them being lost or stolen. 

The prescription is an electronic message so no paper prescription is needed. As soon as your GP authorises your prescription, it is sent electronically to the pharmacy you have nominated and they have access to the prescription and can dispense it. This means you may not have to wait as long for your prescription and your prescription can be prepared for you, before you arrive. 

You have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop. If the prescription needs to be cancelled or changed, your GP can electronically cancel and reissue the prescription without you having to return to the practice or having to wait for the pharmacy to come back to the practice to collect it.

What You Should Do Now 

If you already have a nominated pharmacy that collects your prescriptions, you do not need to do anything. To nominate a pharmacy, you can either let the pharmacy know you want to nominate them, you can contact the surgery and we will add your nominated pharmacy to your record.
